This is the one Challenge site where the lighthouse's most important optical artifact is not inside the lighthouse. The Barnegat Light Museum occupies the borough's former one-room schoolhouse, which served local children from 1903 to 1951.

Inside is the original first-order Fresnel lens removed from Barnegat Lighthouse in 1927 when a lightship took over offshore duty. That makes the museum more than a companion stop. The lens is the technological heart of Old Barney's original operation, moved down the street and preserved after the tower's role changed.

The museum also interprets Barnegat Light, the fishing industry and Long Beach Island history.

Project-management note

Visit the museum and lighthouse as one package. They are less than two miles apart. The efficient sequence is museum first, then lighthouse, then leave the north end of LBI without creating another local reversal.

Worth noticing nearby

The museum's gardens are an easy few-minute pause. If this were not a timed Challenge, Barnegat Light's fishing-village character deserves a slower walk; during the route, the museum and lighthouse already give the area enough time.
