Rocky Horror Is Ready to Do the Time Warp Again in New Brunswick
Barry Bostwick joins a 4K screening, live shadow cast and full audience-participation night at State Theatre New Jersey on Oct. 3.
There are movies you watch, and then there are movies that require a room full of people to finish the job. The Rocky Horror Picture Show has spent decades proving it belongs firmly in the second category, and on Saturday, Oct. 3, State Theatre New Jersey will turn its New Brunswick stage over to the full experience.
The Original Cast Spooktacular Tour brings Barry Bostwick, the film's original Brad Majors, to the theater for a 7:30 p.m. screening of a new 4K restoration. The Friday Nite Specials will provide a live shadow cast, with audience participation built into the evening. The theater is also promising a memorabilia display featuring artifacts and an actual costume from the film, along with a costume contest.
For anyone whose Rocky Horror history began in a theater rather than on a television screen, that combination is the point. The movie is only part of the event. The crowd, the responses, the costumes, the people who know exactly what is coming and the people seeing the whole strange machinery work for the first time are what make each screening its own thing.
I first saw Rocky Horror live in 1992 and it was unforgettable. That is about as far down the nostalgia road as I am going to travel before this one; there will be plenty of room for the old stories after we have a new one. For now, the more interesting question is what the experience looks like in 2026, with Bostwick in the room and another audience preparing to become part of the show.
There is more after the credits, too. State Theatre is offering a separate Rocky Horror-themed after-party following the screening, as well as a VIP pre-show meet-and-greet option with Bostwick. General tickets start at $34 including fees, while the after-party is a separate $12 add-on and requires a ticket to the main event.
Rocky Horror has never depended on being preserved quietly. It survives because people keep showing up and doing it again. On Oct. 3, we will be among them, and this time, we will save the real nostalgia for the dispatch from inside the room.
