There are easier ways to get a cup of tea and a scone. Very few of them come with more than two centuries of New Jersey history, a seat inside a historic mansion and a view into gardens that have been part of the property since the eighteenth century.
On Thursday, September 24, and Friday, September 25, Morven Museum & Garden will host its September Afternoon Tea with the Secret Tea Room, bringing a traditional Cream Tea service into Morven’s Garden Room. Seatings are scheduled for noon and 2:15 p.m. each day, with each 90-minute service limited to just 20 guests. The noon seating on September 24 is already sold out.
That limited scale is part of the appeal. This is not a hotel ballroom tea built around rows of tables or a large public festival moving people through in waves. The setting is deliberately small, and the room is part of the experience: guests are seated inside a mansion whose history stretches back to the Stockton family and the Revolutionary era, and which later served as New Jersey’s governor’s residence for five governors.
The Secret Tea Room will serve guests from a menu of teas and infusions, accompanied by freshly baked scones, tea sandwiches, dessert and a sparkling drink. The service also leans into presentation, with the Tea Room’s collection of chinaware selected to complement Morven’s Georgian architecture. In a room like this, the china, the windows, the garden beyond them and the building itself all become part of the table setting.
Morven is not simply borrowing history as atmosphere. Richard Stockton, one of New Jersey’s signers of the Declaration of Independence, built his home on the property in the 1750s. Across generations, Morven was a family home, a site shaped by the labor of enslaved people and servants, a governor’s mansion and eventually a museum. Today, its interpretation presents that history more broadly, including the people who lived and worked on the property alongside the political figures most associated with it.
Tea guests can spend more time with those stories before they sit down. Each ticket includes an optional docent-led museum tour, scheduled for 11 a.m. before the noon seating and 1 p.m. before the 2:15 p.m. seating. Admission to Morven’s exhibitions is included as well, turning the afternoon into something closer to a compact museum visit with tea at the center rather than a meal with a historic building in the background.
September is also a particularly active moment to make use of that access. Morven’s 2026 programming includes “Five Independent Souls: The Signers from New Jersey,” examining the five New Jersey delegates sent to Philadelphia to vote for independence, and “Voices in Print: New Jersey Black Women Printmakers Shaping the American Narrative,” which opened September 4 in the Stockton Education Center. The latter brings together work by Black women artists connected to New Jersey and is part of the broader Re-Visioning America collaboration in Princeton.
The September tea therefore lands in a useful sweet spot for Morven: the event can be enjoyed simply as an elegant afternoon out, but the building makes it difficult for the experience to remain only decorative. The place has layers. A tea service can be relaxing and beautiful while the rooms around it carry a much larger story about family, politics, labor, art and the changing ways New Jersey remembers itself.
For guests who like their history with a little ceremony — and their ceremony with properly brewed tea — the September seatings offer a rare chance to do both at the same table.
